It’s not good enough to have goals. It is true that you won’t accomplish much without them but you have to apply some effort to make them effective. They must be written and must be someplace where you read them daily. But that is just the start. When you write a goal it must be SMART if you are going to reach it. Your life success will depend on it.
SMART is a quick way to remember five principles of goal setting;
- Specific – your goal must contain the five W’s – Who, what, why, when and why. If your goal is a trip then identify where you are going, when you are going, who is going with you and why it is important to you. It’s the specifics that get the emotions going and it is the emotions that drive your unconscious mind to find a way.
- Measurable – pick a specific target – an amount of money, a level of business activity so that you can know when you arrive at your goal or where you are on the path.
- Attainable – make your goal something that is possible to achieve. It should stretch you but it must be possible or you set yourself up to fail before you start.
- Relevant – It must mean something to you, demonstrate accomplishment or achievement
- Time bound – You must have a specific date when you want to accomplish the goal.
