Retirement is not age related.
The simple truth is that we learn all the wrong things about retirement. Society has defined a retirement age and how you are supposed to act but there is nothing about retirement that you can’t change. Forget the old definitions and decide for yourself what retirement should be. You don’t have to be 65. You don’t have to wait for social security. You don’t have to get vested in your retirement plan at work. In fact you don’t need a job to make it happen. (Well, you might need a job for a time just to get things going). Forget the old 45 year plan about doing something you hate for people you can’t respect for longer than you can stand so you can retire at 50% of a salary that wasn’t enough anyway. Break yourslef loose from the myths about retirement and open your eyes.
The critical criteria for retirement is money- not age
Very few of us would stick with our jobs if we didn’t need the money. If you develop the income to support your lifestyle, then you can quit your job and live the life you choose. Now maybe you still have to invest some time maintaining you income, but there are opportunities that don’t require a 40 hour work week or anything close. So stop thinking about retirement and old age as linked. Think instead about building an income that will support your ideal lifestyle and start it now.
The earlier you do it the easier it is.
A young kid just out of college with an entry level job needs to create a much smaller income stream to get him out of the job force (and the E quadrant) than a six figure executive. These days, there is no excuse for spending a lifetime as an employee – unless that is the lifestyle that you want. There is no age requirement for retirement and no age limit. Start as young as you want or wait until the end. It doesn’t matter. Just don’t fool yourslef about the realities.
There is no glass ceiling.
Sex doesn’t matter. Your education or experience doesn’t matter either. All you have to do is change your perspective from an employee to an entrepreneur. Some may find this harder than others but start with the belief that you can make yourself free and then put in the work to change into the person you want to be.
Redefining who you are- becoming an entrepreneur
Society today teaches us to define ourselves as employees. Most of us don’t know an entrepreneur and don’t understand his thinking. Without retraining, an employee can’t begin to understand what it means to own a business or what it takes to move from the E to the B quadrants. So do your homework, find some mentors who have done what you want to do- retire early.
Learn some new tricks.
So whatever age you are and whatever job you want to replace, start by learning some new tricks. Study the Cash Flow Quadrant and learn about the B Quadrant. Convince yourself that the B Quadrant is where you want to be and learn what you need to change about yourself to get there. Commit time to the effort. How much time each week can you dedicate to your retirement? How many years will it take to get your freedom? Study the business vehicles that are available and pick the one that works for you. Then start. If you like this post but don’t know how to get started, send me an email. I will be happy to help you focus on your goals and get started – no charge.
