What good is a dream?

by JOB on June 29, 2010

Now that you have created your first dream list, take a moment to talk about Dreams. The first thing to remember is that people who accomplish great things have Dreams while those who live ordinary lives do not. That should be enough to get you started. If you want to accomplish something that is outside your normal performance like a second income stream, you need to reach beyond your current level of commitment and effort. Dreams can help people do that. They let ordinary people open up to ideas that they once considered impossible and take action. They can help us to reach what we are aiming for, even if only for a moment and only in our minds.  And that visualization can provide the inspiration to get moving.

Dreams operate on many levels. They are motivators. They can give us a reason to act. You tell yourself, when I accomplish this then I can have my dream. The dream could be an object like a car or a house. It could be a trip or event. Dreams can also be models for behavior. We see the people who have what we want and we model ourselves on what they do and how they think. We practice living like they live and develop new capabilities. Maybe the most powerful kind of dream is the perfect lifestyle- the way you want to live on a day to day basis. This is another way to describe lifestyle design – designing your perfect life.    This lifestyle dream will change and evolve as you grow and accomplish but it can be the most powerful dream of them all.

Many times we dream about things which seem impossible – like a super car when we are driving a junker and the dream doesn’t motivate because we don’t see how it can happen and we don’t have a path to follow. These are fantasies and we don’t believe that they will ever happen. Experienced dreamers start smaller with a dream that they believe can happen.  You should do this too.  Start with a smaller dreams.  As you become better at dreaming, you will develop progressive levels of achievement with dreams associated with each level. You don’t give up on the super car but you do set an intermediate dream for a reward and motivator for each achievment. When you do this, dreams are converted into milestones measuring your growth and accomplishments.

You can go back and organize your dream list, associating each dream with a level of accomplishment or business success. When you do this your list become more powerful as an influence and motivator in your life as you progress from goal to goal and achievement to achievement. Now that you have your list, start enjoying it. Read it on a daily basis. Think about what you put in it. Underline the ones that make your heart race. Get ready to take action.
